The Higgins band played a set of country tunes at the Spirit Square opening on Nov. 28 for a crowd who braved a frosty afternoon to hear the foot-tapping sounds of the sibling group. John, Kathleen and Eileen Higgins sang some of the hits from their last album, Real Thing, as well as a few Christmas classics. The night before, they played to a packed house at the Capital Stage at Iron Mountain Music. John said the venue is a great place for music. “It was like something out of a high-dollar CMT Christmas special,” he said. “That room is just so well done and people were there and they packed the place. It was really just like sitting down in your living room playing a tune. They could pretty much bring in anybody and I don’t think anybody would feel out of place on that stage.” The group is working on some new songs for their upcoming album, which has about eight completed tracks set to go. The song Dreamers Like Us was written by Kathleen Higgins and Nashville-based country singer Deric Ruttan, who recorded the song and pitched it back to the Higgins to put on their new album. “He just went, guys, I don’t know, to me this sounds like a hit,” said John. “And so we’re going to record the vocals for that tomorrow.” This is the third time The Higgins have performed in Merritt. John said this town is special to the trio because they had their first big band show here, their first chance on a big stage, and John proposed to his wife, Maria, here. “It’s just such a warm town -- even if it is a little cold sometimes,” he said with a laugh. “And it’s a beautiful little gem in the crown of B.C. Playing Merritt is one of the highlights of our year.”
