Things are looking up for ice fishing.
Even I caught one. A brookie to boot.
A friend of mine convinced me to brave the drive Sunday morning and go ice fishing at Red Lake over Kamloops way. We did land five and lose one. One was mine Greg got the rest. Now the thing is, how do you get the big ones that push your bait around to eat? Worms worked best for us on a small jig. Both fish had freshwater shrimp in them when I cleaned them though. Go figure!

The Kane valley lakes continue to produce. Switching through baits will help you find the one that is best for the day. When I go I am loaded for bear with four or five baits and scents. You just don’t know what they want. Mealworms and maggots are two of the standbys that should be in your arsenal.
Seems that most folks are reporting decent success at whatever lake they are fishing right now. Ice fishers are notorious for saying things like “ I got them at the lake up the hill.” As we receive more specific information we will pass it along.
A portable fire pit is a great idea if toasting smores while waiting for the fish to bite is your idea of fun. An old wash tub or washing machine basket on legs keeps the fire off the ice and the makes cleanup easy.
See you out there.
